It’s a sad day in Hip Hop as on half of the pioneer rap group Mobb Deep has died, sources confirm.
Prodigy, whose real name is Albert Johnson, had battled sickle cell anemia since birth, and was hospitalized in Las Vegas just a few days ago with “complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis”, according to the group’s publicist.
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep,” their publicist said in a statement. “We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
The exact cause of death has not yet been released.
In addition to being a respected member of the Old School Hip Hop community (remember “Quiet Storm” featuring Lil Kim?), Prodigy released a cookbook of prison recipes last year, based on his time in jail, called “Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook.”
Rest In Peace.
